After three years of efforts .. the autonomous mobility team built the fully autonomous wheelchair

After three years of efforts under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Volkan Sezer, in control and automation engineering department, the autonomous mobility team built the fully autonomous wheelchair. Using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the wheelchair is able to safely take its user to their destination without hitting any obstacles that may lie on its path. The wheelchair makes all the necessary decisions while on its way such as; map generation, localizing on the map, monitoring its environment by constantly analyzing the potential dangers, planning its route and controlling itself to track the planned path. The developed platform can be used not only for people with disabilities, but also wherever autonomous personal transportation is required.  During the project, academic studies on autonomy have been published in various journals and conferences and the thesis studies at different levels were completed. The project was selected as the most successful scientific research in the field of accessibility and was awarded by the ministry in 2021. In addition, the developed solutions for various autonomy subproblems have been implemented in several commercial robotic applications.
